You Can Reach Nations Locally: Missions in Your Front Yard!

•April 21, 2012 • Leave a Comment

Do you have a Chinese or Indian restaurant in your area? Do you have a gas station with a clerk from another country? Yes? Then you have international people in your community!

Reaching International People

Service to the community is one of the greatest ways to connect to people, bless the atmosphere of the community and bring about positive change in people’s lives.  Reaching out to international people as a service to your community is one of the easiest ways to get involved in as a soul winner!

International People can be some of the easiest people to connect to in your city.  They are now living in a foreign country, without many friends and are possibly lonely.  They could be experiencing culture shock, if they have moved from their country in the last several years, which may result in depression and anxiety.

Many times international people have an intense desire to connect to the culture of the city and nation they are presently living in, but surprisingly few international people are ever invited into a local person’s home and very few locals associate with international people for various reasons. Many times locals will not befriend international people because they fear doing something wrong or doing something that will potentially offend the international person. Another reason why locals don’t get involved with international people is because it isn’t comfortable for them to do so, as a local must be willing to learn new ways of interaction and must work at communicating effectively and clearly with a person from a different culture.

Thus, we have found that international people are the easiest to reach.  As an important side note, if a local church seems to be involved already with international people, many times they have few participants actually involved and/or the leader who originally started the outreach program may have moved on or is no longer involved.  So don’t be intimidated to step out and help international people even if you see another church in town doing something similar.

Often it is easier for a local to reach the international people than for an international person who has become a naturalized citizen.  We have discovered that unfortunately few naturalized citizens sometimes feel intimidated by their own people.  An international person likes to connect with a native local because they want to learn about the differences between their culture.  International people also seem to be drawn to people who are different than themselves.  Also, you don’t need to know this international person’s language! Many times the international person wants to learn the local language and is more than willing to teach you a few helpful phrases and words in their own language!  Knowing this should help a local to lose their fear in reaching out to an international person.

Working with the international community allowed my wife to teach many Bible studies to students in Canada, allowed me and my wife to teach Bible studies to international people in the U.S., and allowed us over a four year period to win people from 16 nations in Singapore.  We have learned that many times locals have an incorrect perception of international people’s openness to receiving love, concern and kindness.  They are open and they do desire friendship with someone who cares about them.

My wife and I have been able to connect to multiple nationalities and make friends with them by showing true concern and interest.   Often these friendships have led to Bible studies and resulted in salvation.  We have learned that loving international people will eventually open the door for us to tell them about the greatest gift available:  the love of Jesus.  And this love stays with them for the rest of their lives!

You too can do this!  You have nothing to lose and nations to gain!

Locations to Connect to International People:

1) Universities: we connected to international students on university campuses by offering free English tutoring and opening our home as a place for the international clubs to hold events.
2) Restaurants: we found that taking a few minutes to ask a waiter/waitress a question about themselves always resulted in a contact.
3) Libraries/Community Centers: many times these places have a bulletin boards and/or an activities coordinator who will show you community functions for a particular nationality or group, and this allows you the opportunity to get involved by volunteering.
4) International Living Centers/Apartments/Asian Markets/Chinatown, etc.: finding out where a particular group of international people live or congregate or buy groceries (i.e. a particular Apartment complex, a small chinatown, a group of Korean stores or African Food stores) allows you to make points of contact by posting signs/flyers with information about Free Conversational English, Math Tutoring, Free Driving Lessons, or anything else that comes to mind.

I will try to add other bits of helpful information to this blog in the coming weeks and months, so keep checking back. You can also post a comment or question for further information!

Multicultural Harvest!

•March 30, 2012 • 2 Comments

I appreciate the fire and vitality of the churches that I have ministered in over the past few months.  Since the first of the year, we have seen over 30 receive the Holy Spirit, several water baptized in Jesus name and healed physically.  We have traveled to several states and provinces in the US and Canada.  We so appreciate every pastor and congregation that has hosted us for services, missions conferences and seminars.

In February, we were honored to have Pastor Sharp in Del City ask us to help Calvary Christian Center reach out to the Asian District.  We were also asked to work with Paul Tran, Calvary’s Asian Community Director, and we were delighted to do so.  Since we were located in Oklahoma City without any deputation and awaiting the birth of our daughter, this was a blessing, as both Johanna and I are not people who like to sit still!

It was a pleasure to work with Bro. Tran.  We did prayer drives throughout the Asian district, and I had the pleasure of sitting in several Bible studies with him.  It was wonderful to see two of his Bible students water baptized in Jesus name and one filled with the Holy Spirit.

I was thrilled when the Lord opened the door for us to work with international students who have come to the USA to learn English.  We connected several people in Calvary to an English tutoring session that was established with these students.  Preliminary reports show that 49 people from Saudi Arabia, Iraq, China, Korea, Taiwan, Thailand, Japan and Gabon were connected to through these English tutoring classes, home fellowships and special international services!

I was recently told that several students were starting to attend services on a regular basis!  Blessing the international community in every city and community is the will of God.  The Harvest is right outside the front door your homes!  You can meet them in restaurants, gas stations, libraries, dry cleaners and many more unexpected places.  May God grant you and me the ability to see them and to have the vision to be a blessing to them!

Beautiful Mei Li is Here!

•March 6, 2012 • 2 Comments

Just a few weeks ago, Johanna and I were anticipating the birth of our second child, Mei Li (pronounced May Lee), but now she is here!

We so appreciate a family from Altus, Oklahoma, (the Bundy family) who gave us many little girl clothes.  As we unpacked the clothes, Johanna giggled and I smiled as we delighted over the idea that we were about to have a little baby girl in frilly dresses and socks, with her curly hair tied up with bows!  We were also blessed by friends, family members and others who blessed us with gifts.  The Calvary Christian Center in Del City, Oklahoma held an unexpected baby shower, and we are so thankful for the diapers and gift cards that were given.  Thank you CCC!  We cannot name everyone who has blessed us over the past few weeks, but we do want all of you to know that we are so thankful!

Excited about Baby!

On a Wednesday, Johanna and I went to a local hospital where Johanna was induced.  About 15 1/2 hours later, at 11 am on Thursday, March 1, 2012 Johanna delivered Mei Li Dabbs.  Mei Li weighed 7 lbs and 5 ounces and was 21 inches long.  The doctor said she was a completely healthy baby girl.

We are so thrilled with God’s little gift to us.  LJ loves his little Mei Mei, and he tells anyone who gets close, “My Baby!”

Three days after delivery, we dressed Mei Li for her first church service at Calvary in Del City, OK.  She met lots of new friends and had great fun worshiping in her mother’s arms.

Thank you so much for your prayers.  Johanna, Mei Li and LJ will be traveling with me as we restart deputation next week.  We are thrilled with God’s little addition to the Dabbs Family.

Tamil Ministry Grows

I have been in Singapore now 2 weeks, and I am thrilled at the growth and strength of the Tamil Indian Ministry of Tabernacle of Joy.  When we went back to the USA for deputation, the work was turned over into the hands of Bro Raja and Sis Mariam, who make a wonderful husband and wife team, as well as Priscilla Nathan, who is the administrative coordinator.  The group has seen steady growth and an increase of souls.

I am thankful for Bible studies being taught over the past few months to Mary, Florence, Vijay, Saranraj, Ramachandaran, Vimala, Angel, Revathy, Soudaben, Pradeep, Dhanusha and Thana.  I am thankful for these being filled with the Holy Spirit: Susila, Malliga, Florence, Soudaben, Thana and Allamellu; and I am thankful for these being water baptized: Soudaben, Thana and Dhanusha.

This Sunday a Bible study student named Pradeep that me, Priscilla Nathan and Pastor Tim visited on Wednesday is scheduled to be water baptized in Jesus name!  I trully enjoyed my conversation with Pradeep, an educated man with a masters of economics, whose wife, Soudaben, is an English instructor and who was recently born again of the water and the Spirit.

I was overjoyed to attend what we call a Tamil Mathew Party this past Saturday.  There were 48 people in attendance and 5 visitors.  The Holy Spirit fell and several of the visitors were refilled with the Holy Spirit, and one who requested prayer stated, “When I was prayed for, I felt something drop down on me…wow!”  Raj, Miriam and Sis. Priscilla are doing a marvelous job, and I want to request readers to pray for this group who are making an impact in Singapore and beyond.

I also attended Sunday Tamil Services, and I was blessed by the Spirit of the Lord that manifested during the singing, praying and teaching!

Unlocking the Bible, a 12 lesson home Bible study that me and Johanna were asked to compile and edit when we came to Singapore 4 years ago, was translated into the Tamil language last year.  This is the first Apostolic 12 lesson Home Bible study that has been made available in the Tamil language, that we know about.  Pastor Randy Sholund and Life Tabernacle in Mustang, Oklahoma sponsored this translation.

Here is a recent count of Tamils worldwide (Wikipedia, Dec 17, 2011)

Rank Country Percent Numbers
1  India 5.63 62,110,000

DEEP CALLETH DEEP SINGAPORE CAMPMEETING 2011

•December 6, 2011 • Leave a Comment

I am currently in Singapore attending Deep Calleth Deep!

Deep Calleth Deep is the Singapore campmeeting that happens each year during the first week of December.  It is normally held in nearby Malaysia.  We had at least 3 receive the Holy Spirit during Sunday’s Pre-Campmeeting service.  Bro. David and Bro. Joel Wright ministered in the Holy Ghost.

Seeing Bishop Willoughby after the Sunday service was wonderful!  I look forward to seeing more of him while in Singapore!

OUR TRIP TO KUALA LUMPUR WAS TREMENDOUS!

While traveling via bus to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, our trip was filled with worship and singing.  We listened to various people sing songs in 7 languages: Malay, Mandarin, Japanese, Bengali, Tagalog, Hokkien and English.  What a wonderful way to arrive at campmeeting!

During our 5 1/2  hours drive on the bus, we had lunch at a local restaurant, and I just had to share a few pictures of a dish that we ate.

Both of these fish gave their lives so that we might be full!  We are thankful! :)

I am writing this post while sitting in the Equatorial Bangi hotel in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.  The service tonight (Monday night) was powerful.  Many gifts of the Spirit were in operation.  Waves of the Spirit swept through the congregation with healing and deliverance.  The peace of the Lord was like a strong stream which ran through and around the saints of God.  We were completely renewed and refreshed by the Holy Spirit!

Malaysian brethren have joined us for the night services, and the Singapore church is excited about hosting the Malaysian Holy Ghost service on Thursday night for the Malaysian UPC brethren.  We are expecting a mighty outpouring of the Holy Spirit.  The Malaysian brethren are working hard to bring people to this service.  Thank you for your prayers for this endeavor to reach the harvest and to strengthen the churches of West Malaysia.

You can watch livestreaming of each service via tabjoy.org.  Just locate and click the Watch Livestreaming at the bottom of the page on the tabjoy.org website.  Our nightly services can be seen at 5:30 am CST or 7:30 am if you live on the East Coast.

Thank you for your prayers for this special time that the Singapore church has set aside to meet with Him!

We will soon have a new website to connect you to what we are doing in SE Asia and beyond!

Soon you will be able to go to one location to sign up for our monthly missions newsletters, and to view our weekly blog posts and daily tweets. And if you choose, you will also be able to directly invest into our missions works and sign up as monthly investors. This will all be available at one location.

Another interesting addition that you will be able to access is a monthly video report that we will be giving you monthly. These video’s may include teachings, personal updates, and mission work progress.

We pray that this will give you more access to us and to encourage you to become even more personally involved in God’s vision for your life.
